4JX1. 3.0 liter 4 pot turbo diesel monstrosity. The most horrific disaster out of isuzu.

I had a 2000 model Jackaroo with that engine in it. Was a weapon when running, so much power and torque, but damn it failed in ways that didn't even seem possible.

3 oil pumps, 2 oil pickups, 2 oil filters, an external common rail high pressure OIL line that went through the damn tappet cover with a grommet, the thing would stop absolutely dead if the ORPC valve got a spec of dust in it which happened all the time because they used the wrong orings in the pickups, (which also break off) and the rubber disintegrates, oh and that also happened with the weird injectors that were both cooled and operated by high pressure engine oil, and engine coolant, all via the injector sleeve that ALSO was configured with the wrong O-rings from the factory, oh and when installing them, you can slice the sides of the o-rings off but can't tell until you reassemble the engine and 50kms later half of your radiator is now inside the fuel tank and half the fuel tank is in the radiator and now every single rubber hose and seal in the coolant system is toast, and then it starts to destroy the plastic twirler things inside the radiator, oh and then the injector coils sometimes short circuit inside causing that injector to stop working at short pulse widths causing loping idle which absolutely cluster fucks the dual mass flywheel converting it into 2 flywheels, which then all requires replacement which is an utter pain as the rear main seal is some bizarre 2 piece unit that require its own special adapter, and no one dares replacing a flywheel without replacing the rear main, oh you need a special adapter as well to pull the injector plugs out but you also need a vaccuum to pull the oil, coolant and fuel that seeps into the cylinder when you replace the 3 seals on the sleeve, the 2 on the injector, the one at the top of the injector and the copper washer at the bottom and and the high pressure oil rail used a tiny 2 pin sensor that had to be of course inside the tappet cover that often died as well which also stopped the vehicle dead in the middle of a street, and and and and

I own a 06 trayback navara with the ZD30 engine in it now. The only weak point on those is the injector pump which gets overheated in australian summers, so i put in a diesel cooler on the return line to the tank. Simple intake, no weird injectors, one oil filter, chain drive to the cam which lasts the life of the engine which goes into 6 digits.

D22 you can fix on the side of the road with some duct tape, cable ties and a pocket knife.

Not gonna hate on the 4JX1, that thing got us into but also got us out of some bizarre circumstances, and it did us well, but to be honest, running on 2 cylinders from gordon country to north brisbane got old really fucking quickly. Having two injectors die from contaminated fuel that was contaminated inside the head due to a shitty little O ring that was specced with the wrong kind of rubber, and could get nicked and you would never ever know you if it was perfect, or it would die 50kms down the road...that shits not right. Isuzu fucked everyone with that horrible mess of a redesigned front end loader engine from CAT shoehorned into what was a pretty damn decent chassis, and then holden said "no fucking deal" when half of them failed within 50k.

sad about the vehicle itself though, the 2000/01/02 Jackaroo bodies i was a huge fan, short nose, stopped on a dime, turning circle of about 7 inches, and front torsion and rear coil springs made them very nice cruisers. They were a bit heavy though, so sand work was slightly painful unless you got wide tyres. The trayback navara gives zero fucks about sand.
